The Hero’s Journey of David Messina

What is the best thing that I love about my work? To tell stories to the people out there! When I was a child I was inspired by the story of a nerd victim of bullying that became a superhero (spiderman) to face the bullies in my school. I think that stories have a great power, this is the reason why I love to read and to tell story. Every time I draw something, even if I am not the writer, I try to tell a story with my art, to share with the readers my personal vision of the world.
What is my idea of perfect happiness? Working on my creator owned project, along with my friends, sharing ideas and inspirations……better when close to the sea, drinking margaritas!
What is my greatest fear? To loose the need to be better, as artist and human being.I fear the people who doesn’t try to push themselves to do better, to be better.
What is the trait that I most deplore in myself? I can’t quit. Not even against all the odds, I keep going forward: prefer to fall than to retreat. And despite how much “heroic” this could be seems at first glance, I think is more of a problem  because sometimes I think it’s wiser to stop and to reflect about what’s wrong in what you’re doing.
Which living persons in my profession do i most admire? Mike Mignola. He’s a pioneer, he created an elegant and unique style, a true Maestro. Also he created an awesome character (Hellboy) and a whole universe.Hellboy became a movie, cartoons, action figures, T-shirt, books, again a movie: I think it’s incredible how much is powerful and iconic as character so as his creator.
What is my greatest extravagance? Chocolate eggs with Nutella (chocolate cream) inside! And my love for Kaiju Eiga like Godzilla, Pacific Rim, Cloverfield…
On what occasion would I lie? When the truth is cruel and useless. Sometime a lie is an act of mercy.
What is the thing that I dislike the most in my work? The deadlines! Often too tight and sometime you haven’t the time to think about the best solution for a page or a panel, so you have to use the first idea you had, even if you aren’t certain at all!
When and where was I the happiest, in my work? When I worked on my first creator owned book, The Bounce (with Joe Casey and Sonia Harris) and when I had the chance to draw such extraordinary stories like Catwoman: Inheritance or Star Trek Countdown.
If I could, what would I change about myself? My little attitude to diplomacy! Usually I ‘m that kind of guy who always says what he think, exposing himself even in front of odd situation!
What is my greatest achievement in work? The next one. Always the next one.
What do the words ‘The Financial Freedom to Create’ mean to me? They mean the need to have the serenity to create something without the pressure of the need. Sometimes I’ve to accept work that doesn’t like me ’cause I need to pay bills. I feel lucky since I’had often the chance to work on interesting projects but I try always to work at my best but not always the work really fits me.
Where would I most like to live? Except my city (Rome) which I love, my second choice would be Paris or Florence which I love almost at the same way!

Dick, Solaris by Stanislaw Lem, The Neverending Story by Michael End, It by Stephen King, and the Art Of War by Sun Tsu Some of this books talks to me about the pain of love and loneliness, about how much things could overwhelm you, others about how to fight when odds overwhelm you.
Who are my favorite writers? P.K. Dick, Daniel Pennac, Valerio Evangelisti, Stephen King (not everything but mostly of their production),also as comic book writers my favorites are Warren Ellis, Alan Moore, Grant Morrison, Neil Gaiman, Robert Kirkman.
You Only Die Once. What music would I listen on my last day? Heiruspecs feat. Emancipator 5ves. Once, someone who was really important to me said that this song resembles me in some way.On my last day, I would try to understand who I am and what I mean for the people close to me.
Who is my hero or heroine in fiction? Obviously the nerd of the comic book who inspired me as child: Spider-man. The story of Peter Parker was really inspiring for me.Even if I’m not that kind of fan who read everything about a comic book character, I still think to be Spiderman’s greates fan!
Who are my heroes and heroines in real life? Emergency, Meds Sans Frontiers, whoever do a kind gesture to someone else, to a stranger, for no profit.
Which movie would i recommend to see once in a lifetime? Blade Runner.Something so deep and so present even today, after almost 40 years. A lot of the questions of Roy Beatty are our questions, the effort of Deckard to be a decent human being should be our effort.
What role plays art in my life and work? They inspire me, they make my world better. There’s not enough art. I still remember a night walking with some friends, in the streets of the East Village (New York) we found a Bansky. We felt lucky and excited for that: there was so much poetry and beauty in the fortuity of that nocturnal discovery.
Who is my greatest fan, sponsor, partner in crime? Everyone who chooses to buy a book drawn by me and to spend some time on it. Even if maybe at the end they didn’t like my work, we share time together. My work, their choice: I truly appreciate it. I’m doing this work, the work I love, because of them.
