What is the best thing that I love about my work?
That I don’t need permission to do it.
That there’s a receptive audience.
Also getting paid. I like getting paid.
What is my idea of perfect happiness?
Freedom from insomnia, depression and anxiety.
What is my greatest fear?
Being eaten alive by wild animals.
What is the trait that I most deplore in myself?
My lack of interest in ‘normal life’. My general disappointment in most of humankind.
Which living persons in my profession do i most admire?
The ones who are both great at what they do and humble and kind enough to share their time.
What is my greatest extravagance?
Good scotch. And travel painting. And pants.
On what occasion would I lie?
I’m absolutely terrible at lying. I’d lie to hurt someone who deserved it…because that’s probably the outcome.
What is the thing that I dislike the most in my work?
It’s lack of emotional and conceptual acuity.
When and where was I the happiest, in my work?
When I had mentors pushing me to do better, to reach beyond myself. Calling me out and making me rethink my perceptions of my work and myself.
If I could, what would I change about myself?
My insomnia and anxiety. Also, risking more and trusting the outcome would be nice.
What is my greatest achievement in work?
Not starting a war.
I have no idea. I don’t reminisce about ‘achievements’. If my work finds a willing and paying audience I guess that’s the best I can hope for.
What do the words ‘The Financial Freedom to Create’ mean to me?
Outside of taxes, house bills, food & clothing and insurance…etc. I don’t know if you’ll ever be truly free. But I’m guessing I’m closer to it now than I’ve ever been.
Where would I most like to live?
Right where I am.
What is my most treasured possession?
While I have the things I want and need I don’t look at possessions like that. I’m not that sentimental.
I treasure relationships and experiences a lot more.
I guess my abilities as a creative but…is that really a possession?
What is my most marked characteristic?
My ceaseless drive to make things? My dry sense of humor? My hands? I don’t know. Maybe somebody else can answer that better.
What is my most inspirational location, in my city?
Actually the parks in the city work best for me. Having access to culture is great, but it’s nature that keeps my mind at ease.
What is my favourite place to eat and drink, in my city?
This year it’s Flint Creek Cattle Co. because it’s close by and they have a great happy hour and an excellent Old Fashioned.
What books influenced my life and how?
BLOOD MERIDIAN by Cormac McCarthy- because it reawakened what powerful deep prose could be for me.
DUNE by Frank Herbert- because it was the first science fiction book that didn’t feel like its genre as much as it felt like just a great novel.

What role plays art in my life and work?
Everything. It’s not something I can turn off or on, it’s just always running through my head. Light bouncing off a glass, the shapes and color all around or the cadence of someone speaking; it just never stops me thinking about creativity in some form.

My mom and my wife.
