The Hero’s Journey of Jesse Del Villar

What is the best thing that I love about my work?

What I love most about my work is that I get to do what I love and have fun while doing it. I have always been drawing, ever since I can remember but never did I think that I could have made this my career.

What is my idea of perfect happiness?

Being able to do what I am good at, loving it, and getting paid. That is my perfect combination.

What is my greatest fear?

My biggest fear is not ever being enough. I always strive for better but sometimes it just feels like I’m not good enough to stand out from the rest. That’s what scares me the most, but I push those thoughts aside and keep moving forward to better myself.

What is the trait that I most deplore in myself?

My perfectionism. I’m always working to get even the smallest of details looking great.

Which living persons in my profession do i most admire?

The person I most admire probably has to be Jama Jurabaev. He is incredibly talented and has had the pleasure to work on many amazing films, specifically the Jurassic World franchise. I also really like the work that Jerad Marantz does, great stuff.

What is my greatest extravagance? Easy, all my Jurassic Park and Star Wars collector’s items that I splurge on all the time!

On what occasion would I lie? Only on things that would benefit me in a positive way, mostly white lies that won’t hurt anyone.

What is the thing that I dislike the most in my work? I’m a bit inclined to say changes to pieces, like the design of an armor plate or such but honestly even that is fun because I get to experiment with different looks and styles.

When and where was I the happiest, in my work? When I got paid for my first ever commission, it felt amazing and I was extremely happy to know that someone thought my work was of quality and was willing to pay for my service.

If I could, what would I change about myself? The confidence I have in myself. A lot of times I know I can do better but I’m just not confident enough and that is one thing I need to fix, because I know I can do it.

What is my greatest achievement in work? I think one of my greatest achievements is having taught myself Zbrush, at least the basics needed to sculpt. It was something I thought my school would teach but never did so I did it myself.

What do the words ‘The Financial Freedom to Create’ mean to me? It means to be able to create what I please while getting paid enough to do it. Which in my case would be to create creature art for movies and games.

Where would I most like to live? I would love to live in Austin TX & that’s what I’m shooting for right now.

What is my most treasured possession? To figure this out I like to think of my house being on fire, what would I pick up first. In that case it would be my dog, but if it had to be something material…I’d pick up this small cockatiel plush that fits in my palm that my girlfriend got me for Christmas.

What is my most marked characteristic? I believe my most marked characteristic is conscientiousness because I wish to provide work of quality that is done well and thoroughly, nothing less.

What is my most inspirational location, in my city? I don’t leave my room much, so a lot of my ideation goes on in my room, but if I had to choose another location, I’d go with the coffee shop near my house called Jitterz. We all know how good coffee shops are for doing homework in a nice environment.

What is my favourite place to eat and drink, in my city? I love Freddy’s frozen custard, I don’t frequent it as often as I used to but do I ever love their burgers and their custard is amazing as well!!

You Only Die Once. What music would I listen on my last day? Probably my playlist of chill indie music on Spotify, including artists like STRFKR, VHS Collection, Bad Suns & Saint Motel.

Who is my hero or heroine in fiction? I don’t think I really have a fictional hero but if I had to think of one I think it’d have to be Luke Skywalker from Star Wars, simply cause it’s Star Wars.

Who are my heroes and heroines in real life? My parents. They’ve done so much to help me and my siblings succeed and have always been there for us.

Which movie would i recommend to see once in a lifetime? There’s so many, I’m a huge cinema geek but if I had to pick one…I think I’d go with Fight Club. I recently saw it for the first time and the reason I chose it is because I believe it illustrates the society we live in today and how we are in an endless circle of money and material very well. It’s a little weird at times but I believe it’s a good flick.

What role plays art in my life and work? My work and my passion, It may be something I do to make money but it’s something I absolutely love to do.

Who is my greatest fan, sponsor, partner in crime? Simple, my girlfriend! She’s my cheerleader, my number one fan, and tells me everything I need to hear. Without her I wouldn’t have the motivation to keep going sometimes.

Whom would I like to work with in 2019? Probably Jerad Marantz, I would absolutely love to work with him but mostly to see his process and learn from him.
