The Hero’s Journey of Shaool Levy

What is the best thing that I love about my work

I’m an animator and I love seeing my work come to life. Starting from a small static drawing, I try to think about what my sketch is thinking, his attitude and demeanor. I give it attributes from the people I see, and add a lot of my personality into it.

This is my way of acting in front of an audience without setting a foot on stage.

What is my idea of happiness

I love swimming and diving in the ocean, visiting the aquatic world and having time to reflect on it.

I also love being able to travel, get some fresh air and sunlight, but also to still manage to work on fun projects without a tight deadline (At least I can dream, can’t I?)

What is my greatest fear

Trapped, stuck at home. I felt it during the Covid quarantines.

Also I hope to always work on self improvement rather than becoming stale.

What is the trait that I most deplore in myself

Comparing myself to others. I think sometimes it brings me great motivation to improve but it can also make the neighbor’s grass seem greener.

Which living persons in my profession do i most admire

I was a big fan of Adam Philips, he was an animator who made a small web series which I lived on for inspiration as a kid.

I also love Ben Mariott as a motion designer, because he makes the magic of animation from little to nothing tools.

And I will always be amazed by Andreas Hykade’s films.

What is my greatest extravagance

When I dance with my girlfriend. I can only get the nerve to dance when I’m with her. But once we are together, just you dare get me on the dance floor!

On what occasion would I lie

When nobody will gain from hearing the truth, when someone isn’t ready to hear the truth.

What is the thing that I dislike the most in my work

My sketchy lines, I wish to make clearer lines.

When and where was I the happiest, in my work

When I have the freedom to try new things on a project, or when I find the story to be motivating me to do my best.

If I could, what would I change about myself

I would love to be less stressed and try to look at the big picture. On the other hand, I do my best work when I’m overworked.

What is my greatest achievement in work

My graduation film was screened at the Tel Aviv museum of arts two years ago and was sold to a streaming service. I was melting with pride!

Where would I most like to live

I’m still searching, I think I want to leave Israel. But I just can’t leave the Mediterranean sunny weather so right now I’m checking Greece and Portugal as options.

What is my most treasured possession

I recently had the pleasure of moving into 9 apartments in a single decade so I try not to get too attached to stuff. But if I have to choose, I would pick a beautiful mug gifted to me from my brother.

What is my most marked characteristic

tenacious and persistence. My friends at school got very impressed by how much time I spent sitting and working on what I liked, so they called me “Iron Ass” because of it (at least I hope it was because of it).

What is my most inspirational location, in my city

Woodmaker’s alley. A small narrow alley in Tel Aviv which is full of graffiti and wood makers who make beautiful hand made furniture.

What is my favorite place to eat and drink in my city

The more I live in the city, the more I’m attracted to plain home cooking. But I do love some Indian restaurants such as Tandoori.

What books influenced my life and how

“Hitchhiker’s guide to the galaxy”, a book that was read to me when I was young and it helped me accept the more absurd parts of life.

You Only Die Once. What music would I listen on my last day

“So long and thanks for all the fish”!

Who is my hero or heroine in fiction

Bilbo Baggins, I really like the reluctant heroes who just want to stay at home rather than some idealistic brave and perfect hero.

Who are my heroes and heroines in real life

Doctors, teachers and parents. Somebody give those people a medal.

Which movie would i recommend to see once in a lifetime

“Mary and Max” is a beautiful film about accepting your flaws.

What role play stories in my life and work

As an animator I live and work for stories. I grew up reading Greek mythology and falling in love with them, learning to tell stories while getting my degree in cinema and got to make a film about my grandma and dad’s life story. I believe that through stories we pass our past experience, beliefs and ideals onward. And when I’ll have a kid, I will love to tell him stories.

What do the words ‘You are the storyteller of your own life’ to me

Like any good story you don’t know the end of it, and it has its ups and downs, but if you try to pay attention to the story you can really enjoy it.

Also like any story it would be better to add zombies and unicorns into it!

Who is my greatest fan, sponsor, partner in crime

My girlfriend, who supports me and my work even when she finds me going to sleep at 2 AM because of it.

Which people or companies would I like to work with?

Cartoon Saloon studios

The SPA studios

Exit 73 studios

Bill Plympton

Andreas Hykade

Joanna Quinn

Adam Phillips

What project am I looking forward to work on

I want to be a part of a film that would make the audience feel, to sell them the story of a fictional character like it was their good ol’ friend.

It could be a big fancy production, it could be small and niche, it could be a film, a show or a video game, as long as when the screen turns black the viewers felt like they just got out of a roller-coaster.

What do the words “Passion Never Retires” mean to me

When I was 16 I was afraid of buying an expensive computer to animate because I feared I would just get bored of animation.

When I was 22 I was afraid to study animation for the same reason.

Yet I’m 31 and still can’t stop animating at work and in my spare time, so I hope to hold a pencil in my hand for as long as I live 🙂

Which creative professionals should Peter invite to tell their story?

david OReilly

Bill Plympton

Andreas Hykade

Joanna Quinn

Enric Sant Marqués

Ben Marriott

Ryan George

Nick Ladd

Dan Frank

Noelia Muíño González
