- QUEST
- Nobody gives you power. You just take it.
- Obeying the rules is obeying their rules.
- Don’t just express yourself. Invent yourself.
- Astonish me.
- Build something great.
- Make it immortal.
- Reward excellent failures … punish mediocre successes.
The Call to Adventure
We too often tell ourselves the story that we are victims of heartless organizations, that we are pawns, hapless and helpless “cubicle slaves”. We must tell ourselves a new, more powerful story. The new story is that all work is project work and that every project must be a QUEST (special, meaningful, WOW) Project. (Or else a tragedy). (Or Else means “No role whatsoever… for cubicle slaves content to perform de facto ‘rote chores’)
The Hero’s Journey
The journey to a world where ….. WORK MATTERS
The journey to a world where…… Bureaucracy is Denied.
The journey to a world where…… we Learn Something New Every Day
The journey to a world where … we Revel in the Thrill of Changing Times
The journey to a world where we can …. Brag About What We Do.
Quest – What is it Good For?
Quest Project: one that has “goals and objectives” that inspire. And inspire others. Quest Projects are…
- Projects that Matter
- Projects that Make a Difference
- Projects that you can Brag About …. forever.
- Projects that Transform the Enterprise.
- Projects that Take Your Breath Away.
- Projects that make you/me/us/them Smile.
- Projects that Highlight the Value that You Add … and Why… You Are Here on Earth.
- Quest Projects are … not hype.
- Quest Projects are …. a necessity. (New necessity).
The great ballet choreographer Sergei Diaghilev routinely begged his prima donna’s : “Astonish me!”
Nintendo’s former president Hiroshi Yamauchi, when the company’s top game designer once asked what he should do next, responded: “Build something great!”
Legendary ad man David Ogilvy told a copywriter who inquired about the desired outcome of a project: “Make it immortal!”
The “How” of the Quest
How should you evaluate a project? Any project? Every project?
Measure every project you undertake along five dimensions (and to measure each dimension quantitatively)
Quest! – Authenticity – Beauty! – Impact! – Raving Fans!
So what, in particular, do I mean when I refer to measuring the “QUEST” dimension? Consider your current project. Or, if you are the chief storyteller, consider your portfolio of departmental projects.
On a scale of 1 to 10, rate each project more or less as follows:
- “Another day’s work. Pays the rent”
4. “We do something ‘of value'”
7. “Pretty damn cool (and definitely rule breaking)
10. “WE AIM TO CHANGE THE WORLD”
With every project, you should continually be asking: Is it …. a QUEST? Is it … still a great story? Does it take your breath away? “Take your breath away” In these …. yes… Breathtaking Times.. shouldn’t that be the Goal of Anything that You Do? Isn’t that routinely what a cellist tries to do during a three minute solo? Why the shell shouldn’t that be what you try to do in … Finance … Engineering… HR?
