Riffing off ideas articulated in Peter de Kuster’s The One Great Story The Hero’s Journey in the Movies serves both as a sequel to that seminar and a series of examples attempting to demonstrate its validity.
In his seminar, Peter, borrowing ideas from Carl Jung, Joseph Campbell, Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi and many others argues that every story follows certain patterns–which he characterizes as a powerful story you tell yourself about yourself.”
In The Hero’s Journey in the Movies, Peter breaks this journey up into stages, using famous films to illustrate the universality of this story. During the course of the seminar, he unpacks the mythic structure of horror, war, drama, romance, comedy, science fiction, action-adventure, the western, and the thriller, drawing on films as diverse as High Noon, The Graduate and Sleepless in Seatlle . His insights in the stories you tell yourself, your plots and consideration of various archetypal characters (“the shadow,” “the trickster,” “the herald,” “the shapeshifter”) and narrative devices (“the elixir,” “the adventure,” “the threshold,” “the road back”) provide a clear picture of how the power of archetypes can be used to rewrite the story you tell yourself. In the process transforming your creative life and business.
As you follow Peter’s descriptions, you will be inspired to create a legend of your own.
