The Hero’s Journey of Ruben Van Leer

What is the best thing that I love about my work?
I love the moments of insight in my work while connecting and crossing different (art)disciplines. I feel those insights are bigger then myself, as if I’m constantly conditioning myself to let go of my ego…

What is my idea of perfect happiness?
I believe there’s a beautiful equilibrium somewhere hidden within our society. Every day I’m looking for this; I see it as a “shared happiness”.

What is my greatest fear?
My greatest fear is that I’m not aware of the consequences of my everyday (artistic) decisions. I wish all my decisions can create beauty for the human race and contribute to the end of suffering for us and our environment.

What is the trait that I most deplore in myself?
I practice the reflection of my own thoughts. I don’t always trust my thoughts and feelings, so I go deeper and deeper into the ‘rabbit hole’…

What is my greatest extravagance?
Sometimes I simply forget to breath in the fastness of the day. Than my energy goes down and I want to sleep.

On what occasion would I lie?
I would lie to save live(s). If I’m lying, I probably am not aware of it, because I’m a principlist.

What is the influence of role models, in my work and in my life?
People who are courageous; simply dare to say what they feel and question their own mind. Every time this is a reminder for me to express more completely in my work, of who I am.

What is the thing that I dislike the most in my work?
I dislike the ‘blind spots’ in my work; the stuff I can somehow sense that is lacking quality or awareness, but can’t put my finger on (yet).

When and where was I the happiest, in my work?
I was happy during and after the creation of my sci-fi film Symmetry (www.symmetrymovie.com), because I felt like we found a piece of this collective equilibrium I’m looking for.

If I could, what would I change about myself?
I bite my nails occasionally, this can stop.

What is my greatest achievement in work?
To inspire people with my films, artworks and collaborations. The greatest achievement for me is when the works can move others to also undertake their own intrinsic (creative/artistic) journey.

What is my most inspirational location, in my city?
A simple walk can do wonders. Especially walking the canals in Amsterdam, where the Golden Age architecture remind me of Spinoza, Leeuwenhoek and Rembrandt.

What is my favourite place to eat and drink, in my city?
A great place to hang out for a good conversation and a bite/drink is The Huxton: a sexy budget hotel and restaurant in the centre of Amsterdam.

Who is my greatest fan, sponsor, partner in crime?
My greatest fans come after a (film)screening to me and express what they’ve seen in my work and how they relate to it themselves in their own life. Pianist Tigran Hamasyan is a partner, who I’ve been creating couple of projects with lately.

Whom would I like to work with in the future?
I want to connect all universities in Europe to create a next media-channel for the public; a library of Alexandria 2.0. Basically to create an innovative platform for all new makers like myself to be able to express our contemporary culture and research what quality media means to us all.

What project, in the nearby future, am I looking forward to work on?
Together with composer Kate Moore I’m premiering a new interactive VR-film oratorio piece ‘Sacred Environment’ in The Concertgebouw in Amsterdam June 24th 2017. In March 2018 I’m launching a new interactive film installation in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam about the masterful paint technique of Rembrandt.
