The Hero’s Journey of Fabrizio Modina

What is the best thing that I love about my work? I am a writer and pop exhibition’s curator. I turned my passion of toy’s collector into a job and that’s amazing for me. The thing I love the most about it is to be free to decide the schedule of my day: I work a lot, frequently during the weekend and in the evening, but it’s my choice, not someone else decision. To be free and doing what I like turns my job in a wonderful hobby.

What is my idea of perfect happiness? To have an idea and make it real. To see a project that became an exhibition or a book. To share with people my interests and see that my job is appreciated. To earn money making the things I like the most.

What is my greatest fear? Not achieve what I’ve wrote before. The blank page, the loss of inspiration. It happens sometimes and it is so frustrating.

What is the trait that I most deplore in myself? I can’t be rude with people and sometimes they take advantage from this. I am too much smiling and polite while I should be more brutal with someone. Out there, there are people who have not care and respect about the value of our job and they should be punished.

Which living persons in my profession do i most admire? Speaking particularly of my job, as writer, collector or curator it is not people that I follow. I admire artists in general, people like Alex Ross, Alan Davis, John Byrne who put art and elegance inside comics. I really like J.K. Rowling not only for her genius but even for how smart and sensible she is. And then there’s Madonna, who taught me to believe in talent and never, ever, give up.

What is my greatest extravagance? Collecting crowns. And to have a very big copper crown on the top of my veranda. My friends love take pictures of it.

On what occasion would I lie? To cut a long story short. I don’t like to tell lies, sometimes I prefer to not say the truth.

What is the thing that I dislike the most in my work? Sometimes I have to work for customers without any taste, any basic instruction, any clear idea. I have to deal with it, as all the artists do.

When and where was I the happiest, in my work? When I touch the first copy of a new book, when I see people happy for my exhibitions. And, of course when I add a new toy in my collection.

If I could, what would I change about myself? Maybe to be a little bit more sporty. I am so lazy.

What is my greatest achievement in work? My first book, “Super Robot Files 1963/1978” and the exhibitions I’ve made for very important museums.

What do the words ‘The Financial Freedom to Create’ mean to me? That’s would be a dream. To finance by myself my projects keeping intact my vision, frequently changed for the mood of the customers, budget, and other matters not depending on me. I know very rich people wasting money in stupid and vulgar things. If I had the chance I will spend money for culture and to finance young artist, not buying champagne bottles.

Where would I most like to live? I already live where I want to be. When I can, I move to French Riviera, my beloved shelter.

What is my most treasured possession? My family.

What is my most marked characteristic? My golden ring and wearing total black in winter.

What is my most inspirational location, in my city? Everywhere in Torino, so romantic, so elegant.

What is my favorite place to eat and drink, in my city? I don’t have a favorite place. For sure, not fast food places.

What books influenced my life and how? “The Lord of the Rings”. There’s a reason if I’m permanently wearing a golden ring.

Who are my favorite writers? I’m reading comics more than books. Geoff Johns and Brian Michael Bendis are my favorite writers in this moment.

You Only Die Once. What music would I listen on my last day? “Uchu Senkan Yamato’” soundtrack.

Who is my hero or heroine in fiction? Doctor Strange.

Who are my heroes and heroines in real life? My parents.

Which movie would i recommend to see once in a lifetime? Labyrinth.

What role plays art in my life and work? It’s everything, everywhere, anytime.

Who is my greatest fan, sponsor, partner in crime? My dearest friends.

Whom would I like to work with in 2017? With all talented young people full of energy and ideas.

Which people in my profession would I love to meet in 2017? I really would like to meet Mr. Kunio Okawara and get his forewords for my next book.

What project, in 2017, am I looking forward to work on? Two big exhibitions about Super Heroes and Super Robots.

Where can you see me or my work in 2017? Follow my Facebook page and you’ll see.

What do the words “Passion Never Retires” mean to me? All I hope for my days left.

Which creative heroes should Peter invite to tell their story? A single one. Dark hair and blue eyes., thanks.
