What is the best thing that I love about my work? That I am able to paint or draw anything I can imagine and have complete creative control. I can adjust the lighting, point of view, subject matter, and composition until it feels right. I also love seeing people’s reactions. Translating my ideas into something tangible is very cathartic.
What is my idea of perfect happiness? That’s a large question! Regarding my artwork I would say when people empathize with it gives me a truly great feeling.
What is my greatest fear? I suppose being buried alive or trapped with no hope of getting out.
What is the trait that I most deplore in myself? My impulsiveness (I’m getting better!).
Which living persons in my profession do i most admire? There are so many to consider. Lately I’ve been into Micheal Whelan, Robert Williams, Greg Simpkins,
Todd Schorr, Jean Pierre‐Roy, Drew Sturzen, and William Stout.
What is my greatest extravagance? For nostalgic reasons I like collecting movies and documentaries on VHS to play in the background while I work. Sometimes they are rare and have never been released on any other format. I hide them away in the closet when not in use.
On what occasion would I lie? To get to the truth.
What is the thing that I dislike the most in my work? Drying times with oils can be frustrating.
When and where was I the happiest, in my work? I have fleeting moments of overwhelming happiness when working on each peice, but painting for days
on end can drain you mentally and physically. So wherever I am when I complete a painting is the happiest moment.
If I could, what would I change about myself? I would love to be able sleep soundly each night without waking up at odd times feeling like there are things I should be doing!
What is my greatest achievement in work? I am always trying to learn and push my ability, but I am pretty happy with my current series of paintings.
What do the words ‘The Financial Freedom to Create’ mean to me? The ablity to take care of your family and pay bills based on the merit of what you’re able to create.
Where would I most like to live? I like to move around and explore different cities. I try to find the positive aspects of each location. I really enjoy isolated places and thick forests, but also tall buildings and lots of people. Anywhere that offers both within a resonable distance of each other.
What is my most treasured possession? My artwork and Les Paul.
What is my most marked characteristic? Possibly that I am unpredictable.
What is my most inspirational location, in my city? Portland offers a lot of good inspirational sketching spots. If you know when and where to go you can
have them all to yourself. There is a spot I go by the Willamette river and sketch for hours. Usually in the morning on weekends I walk around the city and just draw at random.
What is my favourite place to eat and drink, in my city? There’s lots of food trucks around the city where I like to get a gyro or grilled cheese. Let’s not forget
Pine State Biscuits, Bridge City Cafe, Pizza Smizza, and Killer Burger.
What books influenced my life and how? Techniques of the Great Masters of Art is great for seeing the variety of painting methods by many different types of artists. Figure Drawing for All It’s Worth by Andrew Loomis. James Gurney’s books
Imaginative Realism and Color and Light had a considerable influence on me when I started working more with oils. They’re a great read not only for instructional purposes, but art history and the possible career paths for artists.
Who are my favorite writers? I read a lot of biographies and non fiction books. I’ve also enjoyed works by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Stephen King, J.R.R. Tolkien, and Ernest Hemingway.
You Only Die Once. What music would I listen on my last day? I would like to be able to plug in a guitar and play some loud energetic music and then end the day with
something peacful and ambient.
Who is my hero or heroine in fiction? Hmm let’s go with Oliver Twist.
Who are my heroes and heroines in real life? My parents.
Which movie would i recommend to see once in a lifetime? Oh don’t get me started. I’ll just say Pulp Ficton or The Bicycle Thief for now.
What role plays art in my life and work? I spend so much of my time creating and thinking about art and have done so for as long as I can remember. It has consumed me. However, I always try find some time away from it with friends and
family.
Who is my greatest fan, sponsor, partner in crime? My fiancée.
Whom would I like to work with in 2017? I would like to participate in a group show. I think just being around other artists is inspiring and offers healthy competition.
Which people in my profession would i love to meet in 2017? I would like to remeet Michael Whelan.
What project, in 2017, am I looking forward to work on? I have several paintings in the works.
