The Hero’s Journey of Michael Sutton

What is the best thing that I love about my work? The freedom to be able to write without supervision, at any time or day that I choose. I can’t function in a 9-to-5 format, and I don’t do well with authority. It’s the Gemini in me.
What is my idea of perfect happiness?  Being stress-free from financial responsibilities. That’s when I’m most content.
What is my greatest fear? Death. It’s inevitable, but the angst-ridden youth I once was feels rather attached to life these days. And it’s not just my own eventual passing that troubles me. I lost three of my closest friends in consecutive order in the early ’00s, all too young. As they say, the beginning of life is a series of hellos but then it becomes a series of goodbyes as you get older.
What is the trait that I most deplore in myself? I tend to procrastinate.
Which living persons in my profession do i most admire? Stan Lee, the co-creator of the Marvel Universe. His incredible vision and ability to touch us all personally will always be a huge part of my life. Kevin Feige, as the head of Marvel Studios, symbolizes how film can be the manifestation of magic. George Lucas, whose “Star Wars” saga became a new mythology for my generation and the ones after.
What is my greatest extravagance? Old comic books. I don’t collect comics for profit so the money I spend on Golden Age and Bronze Age books will never create an ROI.
On what occasion would I lie? I’d lie to prevent somebody’s feelings being hurt.
What is the thing that I dislike the most in my work? My natural humor doesn’t seep through enough. I’ve had this problem for 30 years now.
When and where was I the happiest, in my work? Fall 2000. I did my best writing then. I can’t explain what happened; a light just came on. I was on a roll.
If I could, what would I change about myself? Be more focused. My attention span isn’t what it used to be.
What is my greatest achievement in work? Resurrecting my beloved New Wave radio station WXB 102 in 2005 with the original DJs. Everyone said it’d be impossible as it was taken off the air in the Philippines in 1987, and the DJs scattered to the winds. Bringing it back just might be my legacy; that station meant everything to me.
What do the words ‘The Financial Freedom to Create’ mean to me? Being able to work on projects and looking at them from a purely artistic perspective. No worries about having them pay the bills.
Where would I most like to live? Seattle.
What is my most treasured possession? The tapes of WXB 102 I made when I was a teenager. It was the start of everything for me. That led me into the entertainment industry and daring to be different. It was my Ground Zero, the Big Bang.
What is my most marked characteristic? My excitement for pop culture.
What is my most inspirational location, in my city?  Being on an Argosy cruise around the Puget Sound in Seattle. The water has a calming, inspirational effect; it is pure bliss.
What is my favourite place to eat and drink, in my city? Macaroni Grill in Shoreline, WA.
What books influenced my life and how? “Origins of Marvel Comics” by Stan Lee. At the age of 9, it detonated my imagination. It made me fall in love with comic books, and it was the first time I ever thought about writing.
Who are my favorite writers? As a writer, the list is lengthy and diverse: Alan Moore, David Fricke, Peter Travers, Ed Brubaker, Gail Simone, Mikal Gilmore, Beau Smith, and Chuck Dixon. Too many to mention. I’d like to add the late Philippine music critic Goldwyn Morales Azul. He was a close friend and my mentor; I wouldn’t be here without him.
You Only Die Once. What music would I listen on my last day? “Don’t You (Forget About Me)” by Simple Minds. It was the first song I truly fell in love with and my gateway into New Wave. More than that, it has profound meaning, how we should remember people in our lives who’ve impacted us in one way or another. I hope I’ve done just that.
Who is my hero or heroine in fiction? Green Lantern, the Hal Jordan version. He powers his ring with his mind, proving that it’s the most dangerous weapon in the body.
Who are my heroes and heroines in real life? My mother. She took care of four kids on her own in a different country. She will always be my hero.
Which movie would i recommend to see once in a lifetime? “Star Wars.” The best film I’ve ever seen.
What role plays art in my life and work? It’s the sun from which my heart revolves around.
Who is my greatest fan, sponsor, partner in crime? Two people. My mom, who has supported my writing abilities since I was a little kid. And my best friend Agnes Ingarra, real-estate agent, businesswoman, and singer/songwriter. She taught me how life should be an adventure and I shouldn’t give up my dreams for uncertain things.
Whom would I like to work with in 2017?  Kevin Feige.
Which people in my profession would i love to meet in 2017? Kevin Feige, George Lucas, Alan Moore, Frank Miller, Greg Berlanti, Beau Smith, and Chuck Dixon.
What project, in 2017, am I looking forward to work on? My upcoming podcast with Hunter Lea of Mono in VCF.

What do the words “Passion Never Retires” mean to me? Our love for what we do does not rest.
Which creative heroes should Peter invite to tell their story? Beau Smith.
