The Hero’s Journey of Giuseppe Calandrini

What is the best thing that I love about my work? To sit and start finding the right sounds for the right melody, creating a storytelling with music, filling the visuals. And also to craft sounds: it’s amazing the magic behind knobs and oscillators.

What is my idea of happiness? To enjoy simple ordinary things. They are precious but too much people do not stop and appreciate life as it is.  Happiness is a state of mind.

What is my greatest fear?To lose the people I love. And to not have control on things that happen during life.

What is the trait that I most deplore in myself? Well, it’s easy: the lack of patience, and being too much critical of myself.

Which living persons in my profession do i most admire? In general the ones who are already big in the industry , but keep being human and gentle with anyone unknown. And the ones who share knowledge without fear of being replaced: it’s the real greatness.

What is my greatest extravagance? I think my being at the same time one, no one and one hundred thousand different me. But I appreciate it, and I consider it essential to not be alligned with standards that kill creativity.

On what occasion would I lie? To save someone defenseless from any kind of abuse

What is the thing that I dislike the most in my work? People who unkindly claim to have great music in only few hours, and don’t answer questions or emails, like I am a machine and not a human being. And those who try to cheat artists at all times.

When and where was I the happiest, in my work? The first time my music have been accepted from someone I considered at the top level of the industry. And when I took a plane to fly to Milan to meet some special people at Sony Music Italy to start a creative collaboration.

If I could, what would I change about myself? My way of showing love to people, I would like to be able to show it clearly.

What is my greatest achievement in work? To make music for some of the best music libraries in USA and Italy. But I am waiting for the day I will be asked to score a whole important movie, to have the greatest achievement I’m waiting for.

Where would I most like to live? Where I live, in the countryside of Italy, far from cities and from chaos. But once in my life I would love to visit USA and stay there for a while. It is the place I always saw in movies since I was a child, so different from my country. I love it.

What is my most treasured possession? My children, no doubts.

What is my most marked characteristic? The mèlomanie, an abnormal love and deep attraction to music and above all to melody.

What is my most inspirational location, in my city? The etruscan archeological site in Tarquinia called The Temple of the Queen, at dusk. It has been built  2.300 years ago by the etruscan people. it’s magical. In italian it is called Ara Della Regina.

What is my favourite place to eat and drink, in my city? Anywhere, but with the right people and some good whisky or red wine.

What books influenced my life and how? H.P. Lovecraft books, adding to my music the typical touch of darkness.

You Only Die Once. What music would I listen on my last day? Marooned by Pink Floyd. Love the band, love David Gilmour, love that song.

Who is my hero or heroine in fiction? In general, strong and brave women.

Who are my heroes and heroines in real life? Anyone who has the strength and courage to follow his dreams and to do what he loves, no matter what the society says or expect from him.

Which movie would i recommend to see once in a lifetime? Schindler’s list.

What role plays art in my life and work? It is everything. I can be boring, because I never talk about anything that is not art or creativity. It’s my daemon.

What do the words ‘You are the storyteller of your own life’ to me? That, as the old latins said 2.000 years ago: homo quisque faber ipsie fortunae suae, that means each man is the architect of his own destiny. I am the only storyteller of my life, because I lived it and I made it as it is and I really know how I felt, and how I feel.

Who is my greatest fan, sponsor, partner in crime? No doubts, it is my father, who pushed me in early 80s to study music because he loved listening to me playing, and he still loves it!! And my wife who patiently supports me since 26 years.

Which people or companies would I like to work with in 2021? I would love to compose for at least one of the big 3 ones production music companies: Universal, Sony, Warner. But I would love as well to score in general a beautiful movie or TV serie.

Which people in my profession who can make a real difference in my creative career would i love to meet in 2021? The ones who believe in what I do, that appreciate the way I make melodies, who feel the same feelings I feel with my music. The ones who trust me and can change my life.

What project, in 2021, am I looking forward to work on? To keep going on working despite the covid would be great, no matter on what project.

Where can you see me or my work in 2021? Hopefully in a lot of tv shows or series, worldwide. Luckily I am composing for a lot of briefs from different countries, from USA to UK and Italy.

What do the words “Passion Never Retires” mean to me? That I will die talking about art, music, creativity, … and composing for sure. I already know that. It is never enough for me. And it never will be enough.

Which creative heroes should Peter invite to tell their story? I have no idea about it

  • tickYou are a creative professional who is interested in developing yourself and your creative business.

  • tickYou want to learn more about how to tell yourself a more powerful story, learn about blind spots, and get feedback.
  • tickYou are curious and want to engage in an interactive learning journey with Peter de Kuster.
  • tickYou are motivated to work in-between journeys on yourself (e.g. working on questions that will help you develop new storytelling, mindsets, skills, and behaviors).
