The Hero’s Journey of Menno van Willigenburg

What is the best thing that I love about my work? I really love to create beautiful things out of scrappy materials according to my own definition of beauty. An important motto to me is… without ugliness there is no beauty. I love to feel, see, design and create the beauty without neglecting the ugliness

What is my idea of happiness? My happiness is the freedom of choices. To decide what I want to do, design, create or even people I want to surround me with.

What is my greatest fear? Is to loose control over my brains and memories when I get old and I no longer can pursue my idea of happiness.

What is the trait that I most deplore in myself? My stubbornness is my biggest strength and weakness at the same time

Which living persons in my profession do i most admire? Piet Hein Eek became he lives the idea of creating beautiful items out of scrap for decades. Without him, I could not do what I am doing right now.

What is my greatest extravagance? I love beauty and beauty doesn’t come cheap.

What is the thing that I dislike the most in my work? The daily struggle… What activity has priority and that is not always the most creative or fun activity

When and where was I the happiest, in my work? When I have designed and created furniture according to my standard of beauty and I see my clients over the moon with joy when they see the result for the first time.

If I could, what would I change about myself? I am not always easy for the people I love.

What is my greatest achievement in work? I have made a profession out of my hobby for the second time in my life. During the Corona Pandemic I shifted my DJ career into making furniture out of scarp wood

What is my most treasured possession? My record collection

What is my most marked characteristic? My beard

What is my most inspirational location, in my city? Het Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam

What books influenced my life and how?  The biography of Steve Jobs because it made me realize how important it is to have a clear vision on what you do and the strategy can change along the way.

You Only Die Once. What music would I listen on my last day? A very long mixtape

What role plays art in my life and work? Art is very important to me to inspire myself to design and create beautiful things in life and enjoy the craftsmanship and creativity of the artist

What do the words ‘You are the storyteller of your own life’ to me? I am fully aware that I play an important role in my own story. Some things come along the way you just cant influence, but it is always up to me how I deal with that situation and what decisions I take.

Who is my greatest fan, sponsor, partner in crime?  All the people who show appreciation in what I do. It makes me realize in a humble way that my definition of beauty is being noticed and respected. That gives me an enormous drive to continue to design and create more furniture.

Which people or companies would I like to work with in 2021? I would love to share my passion of designing and creating furniture with likeminded creative entrepreneurs, technicians or retailers I share the same definition of beauty with. Unfortunately I dont know their names yet but I will find out this year!

Which people in my profession who can make a real difference in my creative career would i love to meet in 2021? Piet Hein Eek for sure!

What project, in 2021, am I looking forward to work on? My goal is to improve my workshop a lot to make it even more inspiring then it is already to me. Secondly I would love to share my products to the work and to keep pushing myself to improve myself and my designs.

Where can you see me or my work in 2021? On www.supadupa-upcycles.com and hopefully a lot of retailers in the Netherlands

What do the words “Passion Never Retires” mean to me? It means that my mind is always searching for inspiration, new ideas , new designs and most of all searching for the beauty in life.
