The Hero’s Journey of Garry Yankson

What is the best thing that I love about my work? I love being free. Being an entrepreneur allows you to work on the projects you want and when and where you want. This is really cool. Also, I am passionate about Hip Hop, so the more time I spend with artists or big fans of the movement, the better !

What is my idea of happiness? Happiness is the state where you feel in peace with yourself, your environment and when you manage to really enjoy the moment.

What is my greatest fear? My greatest fear is not to respect myself or my vision.

What is the trait that I most deplore in myself?Sometimes I am too susceptible.

Which living persons in my profession do I most admire? My biggest inspiration is Dr.Dre.

What is my greatest extravagance? I stayed a kid and will always have a part like that behind the man.

On what occasion would I lie? Actually, I’m trying not to lie at all for a few years. I would lie if I am really ashamed of myself or if I want to protect someone. I think this is the only two possible reasons.

What is the thing that I dislike the most in my work? Papers. Period ! Especially in France, there are too many.

When and where was I the happiest, in my work? When I worked in a music studio for the 1st time when I was producing my first album with Ready Or Not Records.

If I could, what would I change about myself?I would love to be more pragmatic and less on intuition. But then I would like to be the opposite.

What is my greatest achievement in work?I am very proud of the Hip Hop Community Marketplace and the RON Festival. Please have a look !

Where would I most like to live? If I could pick any place in the world, I think I would go to Africa or to California ; for now. After travelling as I’d love to, I might choose Sri Lanka or Titicaca !

What is my most marked characteristic? I am passionate. When I work, when I love a friend or a woman, when I speak, etc etc.

What is my most inspirational location, in my city? I really love the park next to my office in Paris where I can go smoke and chill.

What is my favorite place to eat and drink, in my city? I really love going to small and specialized restaurants near by my office. Especially Asian or African ones. To drink and chill I love La Recyclerie, La Bellevilloise in Paris and any bars where my homies and/or myself we produce or display Hip Hop.

What books influenced my life and how?I’ve been really touched by Malcom X Biography by Alex Haley and by “Sapiens” from Yuval Noah Harari. The first one because of the change of beliefs of Malcom X. That is such humility and humanity lessons. Go deep in what you believe is right, but know that mistakes are possible and that you can be wrong. If that happens, what would you do ?
And Sapiens is incredible to help to aware minds about our world and both the evolution and the impact of Human Kind.

You Only Die Once. What music would I listen to on my last day?I would listen to “Esperance de vie” from Youssoupha or “Prière” from Keny Arkana or something like that.

Who is my hero or heroine in fiction?I really like Spider Man.

Which movie would I recommend to see once in a lifetime?Princesse Mononoké from Hayao Miyazaki.
What role plays art in my life and work?Art is a lot in my life. It inspires me. I earn money from it so it fills my fridge and, I don’t know, it touches me. Art is the heart of soul.

What do the words ‘You are the storyteller of your own life’ to me?It’s longer than “be Hip Hop” but to me, it means the same. Even if the choice doesn’t really exist and chaos, environment, History and faith guide our thoughts and acts, you still have a free part that you need to pay attention to. Life is short, make sure you like your story, you only can tale it once.

Who is my greatest fan, sponsor, partner in crime? My cousin, Groover Anderson. We grew up together and he is now my associate.

Which people or companies would I like to work with in 2020? Nice one. I would like to work with people I look up to, friends and brands I respect. What project, in 2020, am I looking forward to work on? I would love to work on a music TV show. Let’s see what the Future will be.

Where can you see me or my work in 2020? In Paris, in the streets, at my office or at home. Same shit, different day.

What do the words “Passion Never Retires” mean to me? You’re wrong ! Passion retires but still I think that if you are passionate you should go 200% in what you do, strongly believe in what you believe in and you should think and speak real.

Which creative heroes should Peter invite to tell their story? Karim Sy, Keita Stephenson, Bolaray, Raphael Favero Longo and I don’t know. Who you want man ! Even the corner hobo could be a hero !
