The Hero’s Journey of Ewen Gur

What is the best thing that I love about my work? I love being free and decide what I want to do, to express myself freely. I’m in control!

What is my idea of happiness? Having a family and being free to do what I want.

What is my greatest fear? Not having enough resource / money to support my family.

What is the trait that I most deplore in myself? I should be more confident.

What is my greatest extravagance? When I like something, I’ll buy it twice, thrice.

What is the thing that I dislike the most in my work? Sometimes I work too fast and the result is simply not good, don’t age well.

When and where was I the happiest, in my work? When I find a new technique or a great idea. When I have the feeling it might change something. When it might be THE artwork.

If I could, what would I change about myself? Make the same mistakes earlier, so I could be more advanced right now.

What is my greatest achievement in work? Recognition, when people like what you do and are willing to invest in your work.

Where would I most like to live? Anywhere, explore the world. For the moment, we have a happy life in Berlin. I would also love to explore main cities more deeply like Moscow, Los Angeles or Tokyo.

What is my most treasured possession? My family.

What is my most marked characteristic? I’m very spontaneous.

What is my most inspirational location, in my city? The Schlosspark Charlottenburg. And the cafés in my neighborhood of course.

What is my favourite place to eat and drink, in my city? So many. But let’s pick one: Dal buongustaio. The best Pizzas!

What books influenced my life and how? Recently: « Make your Bed » by William H. McRaven and « Don’t Make Me Think » by Steve Krug.  It’s about (self) improvement and how little things in your habits or workflow, when they’re well implemented, can generate a lot of positive outcome!

You Only Die Once. What music would I listen on my last day? The music of my wife of course, Delphine Maillard (

Who are my heroes and heroines in real life? The French and Belgian comic artists, from the Franquin generation, these guys could really draw!

Which movie would i recommend to see once in a lifetime? « Fight Club » by David Fincher. It makes you really think about the society we are living in and it’s also very entertaining at the same time. A very clever movie.

What role plays art in my life and work? I think it gives a new angle on how I see life in general. You understand probably certain things that most people don’t. As long as your mind is free, you don’t need a lot of possessions.

What do the words ‘You are the storyteller of your own life’ to me? Integrity. Be true to yourself. Don’t fake it. You make your own choices and no one can / should dictate your life.

Who is my greatest fan, sponsor, partner in crime? My wife. She understands me. And of course a couple of solid friends.

Which people or companies would I like to work with in 2020?  I would like to work with green companies with a social / green impact. As a design fan, companies who upcycle products like « Friday ». Social companies like « Side by Side », who work with disabled persons. Also Bands like Jamiroquai in the early days, Musicians like Tom Misch, artists like Bob Dob etc… People who make the world a better place and think differently.

What project, in 2020, am I looking forward to work on? I will work on my Aluminium series project I started in 2013. It’s a successful series. I have a lot of joy and fun creating these artworks:  Keeping of course the collaborations with my galleries who support my work. And of course to continue to work with my friend Jonathan, we started together . It’s a Print on demand website with affordable & artistic products. We also promote my aluminums and original works there.

Where can you see me or my work in 2020? In my galleries (Raab Gallery, JRGallery, Fancypics, Gallery 8 Arts etc…), on my online shop etc… In the streets of Charlottenburg, near the Castle. Drop me an email to stay tuned (at the end of this interview)!

What do the words “Passion Never Retires” mean to me? To stay true to yourself and to stick to what you want to achieve in life.

Which creative heroes should Peter invite to tell their story? Delphine Maillard, Carole Martiné, Jorge Rubert, Karen Court, Jonathan Trowsdale, Elisabeth Wolf, Nina Maron, Thomas Baumgärtel, Emess, Jan-Frederik Kolbe, Judith Sturm and so many others (sorry for those I forgot).
