1001 Books That Change Your Life
A Literary College by Peter de Kuster
One Story. Countless Discoveries.
Five classes. A world of books. A new perspective on your life.
What is the book that changed your life?
Perhaps it gave you the courage to follow a dream. Perhaps it helped you understand someone you loved. Perhaps it arrived at exactly the right moment and changed the way you saw your future.
Books do more than tell stories. They can change the stories we tell ourselves.
Welcome to 1001 Books That Change Your Life, a literary college for curious people who want to explore the world’s greatest stories and discover what those stories can teach us about living.
Created by storyteller Peter de Kuster, this multi-day experience brings together literature, philosophy, storytelling and personal discovery. Across a series of intimate classes, we explore the books that have shaped human imagination, influenced remarkable lives and opened doors to new ways of thinking.
You won’t simply hear which books you should read.
You’ll discover why they matter, what they reveal about being human and how their ideas can help you write the next chapter of your own life.
A college for the curious
For more than a decade, Peter de Kuster has explored the ambitions, turning points and life stories of creative professionals through The Hero’s Journey and The Heroine’s Journey.
Across more than 150 creative professions, one question has continued to fascinate him:
Which books changed your life?
The answers reveal something remarkable. Behind every creative achievement lies a world of influences: books that awakened an ambition, challenged a belief, offered comfort in a difficult moment or revealed a possibility that had previously seemed unimaginable.
1001 Books That Change Your Life brings these discoveries together in a new kind of literary education.
Inspired by the idea that great books can be companions, teachers and catalysts for change, the college invites you to read, reflect, discuss and discover.
It is not an academic literature course. You don’t need a university degree, an extensive reading history or the ability to analyse a novel.
You need curiosity, an open mind and a willingness to discover.
Your five-class literary journey
Class 1 — The Books That Change Our Lives
Discover the stories that stay with us.
Why do some books disappear from our memory while others remain with us for decades?
Explore the books that have shaped the lives of creative professionals and other remarkable people. Discover how a particular character, passage or idea can influence a decision, change a relationship or give someone the courage to begin again.
Your discovery: Identify the book that has influenced your own life and understand why it continues to matter.
Class 2 — The Art of Living
What can great literature teach us about being human?
From happiness and ambition to friendship, love, loss and the search for meaning, great writers have explored the questions that accompany us throughout our lives.
Meet literary characters who struggle with the same dilemmas we face today. Explore different ideas about what makes a life worthwhile and discover how literature can challenge the assumptions we take for granted.
Your discovery: Find new perspectives on what happiness, success and a meaningful life mean to you.
Class 3 — Courage, Dreams and Reinvention
How do we become the person we want to be?
Every compelling story involves choices, obstacles and moments when the future could go in more than one direction.
Explore novels and memoirs about outsiders, dreamers, rebels, adventurers and people who dare to change their lives. What can their journeys teach us about taking risks, overcoming setbacks and pursuing ambitions that matter?
Your discovery: Recognise the story of change you may be ready to begin.
Class 4 — Love, Relationships and the Human Heart
Why do we love the way we do?
Literature allows us to enter the inner worlds of other people. It reveals the misunderstandings, desires, loyalties and contradictions that shape our relationships.
Explore stories of love and friendship, family and belonging, intimacy and independence. Discover how fictional lives can help us understand the people around us — and ourselves.
Your discovery: See familiar relationships from a fresh perspective.
Class 5 — Write the Next Chapter of Your Life
What story do you want to live next?
The books we love often tell us something about the people we are and the people we hope to become.
Bring together the discoveries of the previous classes. Revisit the ideas that surprised you, the characters who moved you and the questions that remain unanswered.
Which beliefs do you want to reconsider? Which dreams deserve another chance? What would you like the next chapter of your life to contain?
Your discovery: Create your own personal reading list — and a set of ideas to carry into the future.
How the college works
Each class combines the pleasure of discovering great books with the intimacy of a small-group learning experience.
Every session includes:
- Inspiring literary discoveries: Encounter remarkable books, writers, characters and ideas.
- Storytelling: Explore the people, conflicts and turning points that make great stories unforgettable.
- Thought-provoking questions: Connect literary ideas to the choices and challenges of everyday life.
- Shared conversations: Exchange discoveries and perspectives with fellow readers.
- Personal reflection: Take time to consider what each class means for your own life.
- A reading journey: Build a personal collection of books to explore long after the college ends.
You don’t need to finish a long reading assignment before every class. Selected passages, short extracts and carefully chosen stories will make the experience accessible, even when the books themselves are unfamiliar.
The emphasis is on discovery, conversation and the pleasure of learning together.
