Innovation is a journey. Every organization needs its heroes.

What makes some people turn bold ideas into breakthroughs while others find a hundred reasons why something cannot be done?

Why do promising innovations so often get stuck between an inspiring idea and organizational reality? And how can leaders create an environment where curiosity, experimentation and creative courage flourish?

Brainport Eindhoven offers a remarkable setting in which to explore these questions. Here, technology, entrepreneurship, design, research and collaboration come together to tackle complex challenges and create new possibilities.

But innovation is never just about technology.

It is also about people: the people who see opportunities others overlook, challenge established assumptions, connect seemingly unrelated ideas, take calculated risks and persevere when the future is uncertain.

The Ten Heroes of Innovation takes you on a learning journey through the innovative stories of Brainport Eindhoven. Through encounters with inspiring places, real-world examples and the people and organizations behind them, you will discover the storytelling strategies that can help your organization foster innovative thinking and turn ideas into action.

The challenge: overcoming the innovation killers

In many organizations, the devil’s advocate has become a familiar figure.

Every new proposal encounters questions. Every unconventional idea is tested against existing procedures, budgets, risks and assumptions. Constructive criticism is essential, but when objections become an automatic response, promising ideas can be stopped before they have the chance to develop.

The result is a culture in which people learn to protect the status quo rather than explore what might be possible.

The answer is not to silence critical voices. It is to build organizations in which different perspectives work together: where questions improve ideas instead of killing them, where experiments generate evidence, and where people take responsibility for making progress.

Peter de Kuster has developed a storytelling approach based on ten archetypal Heroes of Innovation. Each represents a different contribution to the innovation journey.

Meet the Ten Heroes of Innovation

1. The Discoverer — See What Others Don’t See

The Discoverer goes into the world to observe customers, understand unmet needs and challenge assumptions. Innovation begins with curiosity and a willingness to look beyond what the organization already knows.

2. The Magician — Connect the Unconnected

The Magician combines ideas, people, technologies and experiences in unexpected ways. By connecting elements that previously seemed unrelated, the Magician creates possibilities for new products, services and business models.

3. The Warrior — Turn Obstacles into Challenges

The Warrior refuses to treat every limitation as a final answer. Instead, this hero searches for ways around obstacles, mobilizes resources and helps teams move from discussion to action.

4. The Creator — Imagine What Does Not Yet Exist

The Creator questions conventional solutions and imagines alternatives. This hero gives new ideas room to emerge before demanding that every possibility be immediately practical.

5. The Rebel — Challenge the Status Quo

The Rebel asks why things must be done the way they have always been done. This hero challenges outdated assumptions and opens the door to meaningful change.

6. The Explorer — Venture into the Unknown

The Explorer moves beyond familiar markets, disciplines and ways of working. This hero embraces uncertainty as an opportunity to learn and discover new territory.

7. The Connector — Make Collaboration Possible

The Connector brings different people, disciplines and organizations together. This hero recognizes that complex innovations rarely emerge from one individual working alone.

8. The Alchemist — Transform Ideas into Value

The Alchemist turns promising concepts into something useful. This hero combines creativity with practical thinking to translate ideas into prototypes, services and new business opportunities.

9. The Mentor — Help Others Become Innovators

The Mentor shares knowledge, asks better questions and helps other people develop their capabilities. This hero builds the confidence and conditions that allow innovation to spread throughout an organization.

10. The Storyteller — Give Innovation Meaning

The Storyteller communicates why an innovation matters, whom it serves and what future it makes possible. By giving people a compelling story to believe in and contribute to, this hero turns an idea into a shared ambition.

Together, the ten heroes offer a practical language for understanding innovation as a human journey, not merely a technical process.

Your Brainport Eindhoven itinerary: learn from the landscape of innovation
